Building Core

The term Building Core generally refers to the centralized, structural part of a building that extends vertically across multiple floors of the building. In addition to it's structural role, the building core usually contains a combination of stairs, elevators, mechanical rooms, air handling/utility shafts, floor lobbies, and washrooms. With respect to area calculations, the core usually includes major vertical penetrations such as elevators, stairs, and mechanical shafts, in addition to floor or building service and amenity areas.
